King Vegeta in his Oozaru state
Oozaru (Ōzaru, lit. "Great Monkey"), also known as a Great Ape, is a giant, anthropomorphic, monkey-like creature that the Saiyans can transform into at the full moon to increase their already formidable strength tremendously.
Appearance[]
Oozarus are similar to King Kong, a giant gorilla that first appeared in the 1933 U.S. film of the same name, but with a tail, a baboon-like head, and red eyes. Although its muscular build is similar to a gorilla, but it more prominent and defined in stature. Overall, the design of the form does not directly resemble any single species of existing primate.
Conditions for transforming[]
In order for the transformation to take place, the Saiyan needs to have a tail, as the glands responsible for initiating the transformation are located exclusively there. The Saiyan also needs to absorb at least 17 million zeno units of Blutz Waves through the eyes to initiate the transformation. Blutz Waves are found only in sunlight reflected by a moon. The easiest way to achieve this is to gaze at the full moon, making Saiyans similar to werewolves in this aspect. If any clouds covered the moon, it would block certain amounts of the radiation.
A second method is using the Power Ball technique, a spherical blast that mixes the users ki with the planets atmosphere to gain access to the Oozaru form. This is generally used only by Saiyan elites, which was best seen in Universe 3 against Freeza. Vegeta in many universes is also capable of it.
The third method has only been discovered in Universe 13, where "Blutz Lamps"[1] are injected into the eyes to cause the transformation to happen. No moon is needed to either be created, risk of being destroyed, or potentially being used by a antagonistic Saiyan nemesis.[2]
Power & Abilities[]
In general the user naturally gains enhanced power and resistance.[3] Speed doesn't diminish despite having greater size.[4]
If the Saiyan can no longer see the light of the moon, they'll quickly lose the transformation.[5] All Saiyans maintain their mind when transformed, though they tend to get more violent. Only Goku is different since he's an amnesiac. And Gohan simply wasn't used to his transformations, though he quickly began to regain his mind once talked to.[6] Nonetheless if the user can control themselves, they retain the techniques they can use prior to transforming, but at a much greater degree.
Power Multiplication[]
Oozarus are noted to have their power levels multiplied by ten-fold.[7][8][9][10]
Author Comments[]
Salagir has went on record to state that Oozaru's only have their power level increase by just two-fold. The ten-fold stated by Vegeta in the manga against Goku or what the Heloite said in the Universe 13 special was just hyperbole, not actual facts.[11] A power levels chart was also made to reflect this.[12]
Advancements[]
Golden Oozaru[]
- Main article: Golden Oozaru
The powered up version of Oozaru by combining it with Super Saiyan. In this state the Saiyan becomes vastly more powerful where they could crush opponents who were once more powerful than them. Throughout the Multiverse, only a handful of Saiyans has ever reached this state throughout the millenniums.
